In late June, Fonta Flora employees planned to buy 1,500 pounds of blueberries from a farmer located less than five miles from the brewery in Nebo, North Carolina. On the morning of the scheduled pick-up, however, Fonta Flora cofounder Todd Boera received an alarming text from the farmer. It read: “Bad news. ... Hail last week knocked off half our berries. Use another source for berries. Sorry.”
